According to last year’s statistics, ice and snow-related falls accounted for 29% of worker’s compensation claims during the winter season. In many of these cases, workers were convinced they had on adequate boots or other gear to handle the slick terrain below their feet on jobs or public work projects. The reality is, however, that normal shoes just don’t cut it when you’re working on snow and ice with landscaping equipment or other environments. It’s better to have the proper gear and play it safe. Below we highlight a couple of ice traction products that will keep your feet on the solid ground this winter.
Trex Aggressive Spike Ice Traction Device
The Trex Spike Ice Traction Device delivers an aggressive traction option for surfaces buried in ice and snow. They feature a sturdy stainless steel chain and spike system that can handle the most rugged terrain. The heel spike plate design is flexible yet robust enough to use on uneven surfaces. Hi-Viz orange stretchable rubber will fit around your shoe securely and maintains flexibility even when the temperature reaches below -40º F.
Trex Strap-On Heel Ice Traction Device
Trex Strap-On Heel Ice Traction Device features a made-for-work steel plate that gives your boots the leverage they need to cut through the ice without inhibiting your ability to operate a vehicle. The stainless steel plate will not corrode and gives you plenty of grip and stability on ice and snow-covered terrain. It is designed to keep ice, snow, or other debris from collecting underneath. It is also designed so that you can see it from a distance even when there’s inclement weather outside.
OSHA Standards for Ice and Snow Prevention
Each of our products and services is designed to help you meet or exceed all OSHA standards for the workplace during winter. We choose the products above. For more information on OSHA standards, please read the information below.
To prevent slips, trips, and falls, employers should clear walking surfaces of snow and ice, and spread deicer, as quickly as possible after a winter storm. Also, the following precautions will help reduce the likelihood of injuries:
● Wear proper footwear when walking on snow or ice is unavoidable because it is treacherous. A pair of insulated and water resistant boots with good rubber treads is a must for walking during or after a winter storm. Keeping a pair of rubber over-shoes with good treads which fit over your street shoes is a good idea during the winter months.
● Take short steps and walk at a slower pace so you can react quickly to a change in traction when walking on an icy or snow-covered walkway.
